THESIS STATEMENTIn Homer's Iliad, Achilles' individuality and his thirst for future glory is what makes him so tragic. PURPOSE STATEMENTThrough textual references based on The Iliad, it is evident that Achilles' legacy and death in Troy shows that he is a prototype of the tragic hero.INTRODUCTIONAchilles, the sound of his name would make the enemies, looking into his eyes could almost turn you to stone, he was THE warrior of the ancient world. In his article, Strauss states: “He is the first warrior of the Western world. Swift-footed, lion-hearted, terrible in his war cry, rampager of cities, charismatic leader, breathtaking physical specimen, invincible… Achilles was the best of the Greeks at Troy” (Strauss 1). Achilles was the most feared warrior of his time and this made him famous beyond belief. This is why his death at Troy was so tragic for all of Greece. Achilles devouring rage is his tragic flaw, it comes from his sense of pride or hubris. Achilles demonstrates his rage by killing Hector and defiling his body. In doing so, he sealed his own fate of death. Furthermore, Achilles' individuality and supreme talent for war made him the most beloved and feared warrior of his time. Everyone loves heroes and that's what Achilles was, he was as close to a celebrity as there was in Greece at that time. This is because he was the fiercest warrior of his time. Finally, by trying to avoid his fatal death, Achilles will show that he is the prototype of the tragic hero. Achilles chooses his young death when he decides to fight at Troy. Destiny must be accepted and in trying to change it, Achilles finds himself locked in tragedy. CONSUMING RAGE: THE TRUE CURE OF Achilles: Achilles' consuming rage is his tragic...... middle of paper ...... Achilles was killed by the young prince who started the war, fate finally caught up with him, the tragic hero falls. CONCLUSIONIn The Iliad, Achilles is the example of the tragic hero because of his individuality and rage. Achilles comes face to face with his fate at Troy. When he went to war, he signed his own death certificate, but because of his pride, he went to fight. He believed he could deceive fate, but because of his thirst for future glory and his impending rage, he faced death. As Strauss describes Achilles: “Fame – preeminence – honor – glory… He wanted to be immortal. And he is” (Strauss). Achilles is immortal because he is known throughout the world as the greatest, fiercest, bravest and most skilled warrior the world has ever known..
