    On a summer day in June, the villagers gathered to participate in the annual lottery organized by Mr. Summers because “the lottery in June, but will soon be heavy. » (Jackson 1868). The children arrived first, picking up a few stones left fallow by their parents. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late and begins to chat with Mrs. Delacroix and then the lottery begins. Mr. Summers begins calling the men of the house to the black box to draw a piece of paper that would determine who wins the lottery. The Hutchinson family is chosen this year. Mrs Hutchinson insists her husband was not given enough time to choose. As the family goes back upstairs to draw once more, Mrs. Hutchison still protests. Once everyone has drawn lots, Mrs. Hutchinson is the winner of the lottery. As the villagers pin her against the wall, she continues to insinuate that "it's not fair", but it is too late as she is already stoned to death not only by the villagers but also by her family. Symbolism is when something represents a name or object that you are presenting or trying to explain. For example, the color red can symbolize something bad and the color white can symbolize something good. Additionally, morning can symbolize the start of a new day or a new beginning while night can represent the end of an old chapter. Symbolism is not only used in things like life; it is also used in fields such as education. For example, how a pencil and paper can symbolize a writing or reading lesson or how a globe or map symbolizes world geography. In the story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, Jackson undoubtedly uses a multitude of symbolism in his story.
