Toward the end of the novel, Charlie begins to find himself in another difficult period of his life. His friends are leaving for school and he no longer feels the same way. He thanks his friend, saying, "I want to thank you for being one of those people who listens and understands and doesn't try to sleep with people even if you could have." I really mean it, and I'm sorry I put you through this when you don't even know who I am, and we've never met in person, and I can't tell you who I am because I promised to keep all these little secrets” (206). Even though this friend and Charlie don't know each other, they remain loyal to each other. Charlie really appreciates the loyalty this friend shows him. This friend really means a lot to Charlie, and he wishes his friend the best as well. The feeling of gratitude and kindness that Charlie feels towards his friend is a feeling unlike any other.
