  • Essay / Improving Race Relations: A Natural Process - 294

Improving Race Relations Last summer, I wrote an essay for a first-year composition class on the topic of race relations. Entitled “A One-Tone World: Laughable or Logical? » the article explored the effects of a world where people could not visually distinguish race. The ever-recurring issue of race is one I know well. This annoys me sometimes. I'm biracial and I love it, but I hate standardized forms that require me to identify as only one race. I don't view my ethnicity as "checking just one" and I don't think picking just one is an option. I do, however, think about race and believe that race relations will naturally improve over time as a two-step process occurs. First, ethnic differences should continue to be celebrated, as they currently are in California. Holidays, festivals, and cultural trends will gain popularity among all nationalities, and historically degraded races will gain the pride needed to gain cultural confidence. Mexican, black and Asian pride will grow greatly and people will appreciate the contrasts between them. Over time, racial equality will become a given and the importance of race will diminish. If people don't have to fight for their worth as people, their insecurities will disappear. So, over time, I believe racial differences will become a triviality, something easily ignored. All I could suggest for improving race relations is that this process may continue without interference. Multicultural exhibitions and exhibits that educate people about different ethnic customs and characteristics, as well as racial pride, should be encouraged. Over time they will no longer be needed.
