Suleiman the Magnificent was born in Trabzon, along the eastern coast of the Black Sea, on November 6, 1494. His mother was Hafsa Sultan, who died in 1534. While his father, Selim 1, died at the age of 55 due to illness. When Suleiman was seven years old, he decided to go and study different subjects. Some of these subjects were science, military tactics, history, etc. He studied these subjects at the Topkapi Palace School in Constantinople. At the age of 17, Suleiman was appointed governor of Kaffa, and then Sarukhan. He also ruled Adrianople for a time. Upon the death of his father, Selim I, Suleiman entered Constantinople and took control of the throne as the tenth Ottoman sultan (The History of Suleiman). Some people believe that Suleiman admired Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great was a ruler of the Greek Empire. He spent most of his time thinking about how he could take over the world. His ambition for the land led him to become a leader who never lost a battle and he was able to conquer lands from Greece to Egypt. This inspired Suleiman to try to conquer as much land and become as powerful as Alexander the Great once was. Thus, leading Suleiman to military campaigns in Asia, Africa and Europe. His main goal was the same as that of Alexander the Great. They both wanted to build a global empire that would connect East and West. Suleiman the Magnificent did many things to help the Ottoman Empire. For example, he wanted to expand his empire from coast to coast (east and west). He also managed to take control of Belgrade in 1521 and Rhodes in 1522. Also during the 1520s he attempted to attack Vienna.
