Essay / Jasmine's Performance - 901
Erving Goffman once wrote: "all cynical artists seek to deceive their audiences for the purposes of what is called 'self-interest' or private gain" (Goffman 18). Everyone is an artist and the roles we play are subject to our environment and those around us. The projection of one's personality is based on the role played. The front region, the side of ourselves that we show to the world helps us hide our back region, our secret self; we do this by emphasizing, exaggerating, or making false statements to other people. While studying Jamsine, my roommate, in her work environment versus the role she plays at home, I found a difference in her personality. Jasmine serves as a Resident Security Officer (RSR). Jasmine played a different role by emphasizing her positive characteristics in order to deal with others in her work. As human beings, we are a combination of how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. Human beings find their identity through social interaction with others. (Schellenberg 21). In life we play different roles. We compartmentalize ourselves into different identities influenced by those around us. In order to compare Jasmine in her professional role, I studied her in her home role. From eight in the morning until noon, Jasmine works at the RSR stand in the north of the Netherlands. She wears black sweatpants, tennis shoes, and the long-sleeved white shirt that RSRs wear as a uniform. Her hair is combed and her face is makeup free. The setting in which Jasmine works is a very small booth. The environment is clean and there is no noticeable odor. Jasmine has a gregarious personality. With others, she always has a smile on her face and is very talkative. In her room you can hear her screaming... middle of paper... this is the career path I chose," she said, "it's just paying off for now, until I find another job. Jasmine's lack of commitment to her work is also because she doesn't like the role she plays when she goes to work. She finds the work repetitive. Fortunately, while working as an RSR, Jasmine realized that she could never be someone who worked in a desk: “Working there made me realize my nightmare: working in a cubicle. » Working in this role has enlightened Jasmine about an aspect of herself. Jasmine did not experience much stress in her job due to the knowledge entrusted to her and her lack of motivation. Overall, Jasmine looked noticeably different at the booth than she did at home. At home, Jasmine is talkative and loud. At work, she was tactful and remained silent. The project forced me to see Jasmine in a different light, a more professional character than the relaxed character I see in the dorm..
