    Torture at Guantanamo Under American influence, Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian citizen held in Guantanamo Bay prison, Cuba, was tortured to the point that his entire body was burned. Binyam is just one example of the torture allegations found at the Guantanamo Bay prison, also known as “Gitmo.” Most of Gitmo's detainees are men who brought fear to most, if not all, Americans after the September 11, 2001, attacks, but after reports of abuse, George W. Bush and Barack Obama vowed to close the Guantanamo detention center. Too many Guantanamo Bay detainees have been mistreated at the prison near the major deep-water port on Cuba's southeast coast; one of the best protected bays in the world (“Guantanamo Bay” 1). With all sorts of new and unique torture tactics being used in this prison, American citizens are unaware that they are being represented in such an undisciplined manner by their own military forces. According to numerous sources, nearly 250 prisoners remained in Gitmo. These men are held behind bars due to politically motivated beliefs that cannot be defended in court (Lithwick 1). At least 21 suspected convicts were killed during (or after) their interrogations in custody (Ardiente 2). There are numerous reports of the long-term effects of imprisonment on the men inside these prisons. Some of the long-term effects on inmates include hallucinations, weight loss, anxiety, confusion, impaired vision, difficulty concentrating, and hostility (Greenberg 5). America lacks policies and training that can prevent the effects of prolonged interrogations.
