  • Essay / Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet - 1166

Ophelia is one of the main characters in the play Hamlet, as the daughter of the king's chief advisor Polonius, sister of Laertes, and Hamlet's romantic interest. Ophelia is one of the few female characters in the play and both Ophelia and Queen Gertrude are used to being contrasted. Ophelia is a loyal character, the opposite of Queen Gertrude because Gertrude betrayed her husband, King Hamlet, by poisoning him and marrying his brother, now King Claudius. She is a loyal character and the best example of this is the way she acts around her father. She clearly has a lot of respect for him and appreciates everything he says to her. For example, in Act One, Scene 3, as Ophelia is talking to Laertes about Hamlet, and then their father enters, Polonius says to Ophelia, "For Lord Hamlet, believe so much in him that he is young, and with a greater attachment. that it works more than what can be given to you. In some, Ophelia, Do not believe in his wishes, for they are not brokers of the color their investments show, but mere implorers of unholy pursuits, breathing like sanctified and pious whores, and the better to seduce. This is for everything: I would not, in clear terms, from now on, have you slandering your leisure at any time, to the point of giving words or chatting with Lord Hamlet. Be careful, I'm accusing you. Come your way.” (Hamlet, act 1, scene 3, 24-35) Then, to which Ophelia responds: “I will obey, my lord. » (Act 1, scene 3, 36) She clearly obeys her father when he tells her that she should never see Hamlet again. It can also be inferred that she is naive because throughout their conversation she thought Hamlet was being completely honest with her and she never thought about what kind of person Hamlet might... middle of paper ... ...f his fathers, Hamlet was also betrayed. He kept wondering how his mother could do this to him and Hamlet was plotting revenge on the king; the king also plots his revenge against Hamlet. Hamlet is saddened by the death of his father, but what saddens him even more is that his mother would do something like betray his father. However, her father's death is the main reason why she went crazy. She didn't go crazy because of anything else. She was deeply saddened by her father's death because he was the only one she looked up to and considered her shining light, so to speak, but now that light was gone and she no longer saw the point to continue his life. Ophelia also resented Hamlet after this because she knew he killed her father, but she didn't think she should plan revenge against Hamlet for killing her father.
