Essay / William Butler Yeats - 1678
William Butler YeatsWilliam Butler Yeats was born on June 13, 1865, at 10:40 p.m., in Sandymount, Dublin (Foster, 13). He grew up lanky, unkempt, slightly nearsighted and extremely thin. He had black hair, high cheekbones, olive skin and slanted eyes (Foster, 34). It was assumed that he had tuberculosis. As a child he was ridiculed, mainly because of his Irish heritage (Foster, 16). He accomplished a lot during his life. His whole family was very artistic. He was the eldest of five siblings; Susan Mary, Elizabeth Corbet, Robert Corbet, John Butler and Jane Grace. Robert Corbet died of croup as a child, and Jane Grace died of bronchial pneumonia when she was less than a year old. His father was John Butler Yeats, a Pre-Raphaelite, and his mother was Susan Mary Pollexfen. Her brother, John Butler, grew up to become a well-known painter, and her two sisters, Susan Mary and Elizabeth Corbet, were involved in the Arts and Crafts movements (Foster, 13). Even though William's family moved around a bit, he still received a pretty good education. His family moved from Sandymount, Dublin, to London in 1867, due to his father's work. It is there that William enters the Godophin school, which he attends for four years. Then, for financial reasons, the Yeats family returned to Dublin in the late 1880s. In October 1881 he began his secondary education at Erasmus Smith High School, which he attended until 1883..
