  • Essay / Exploring the women's rights movement with Good Man is...

Flannery O'Conner comes from a well-established Christian family, but her writing demonstrates a very different perspective on life compared to his education (Gordon). O'Conner published "A Good Man is Hard to Find" in 1955, which became extremely popular due to the way it depicted family values, while at the same time integrating violence into its plot (Gordon). This particular style of writing helped her stand out from the authors of her time. Unfortunately, she died on August 3, 1964 and will never experience the recognition that her work received during her life (Gordon). In the 1950s, Americans lived in what is considered a nuclear family (People & Events…). This is a family where a man is the head of the household, while the women handle the rigors of daily household chores (People & Events...). In Flannery O'Conner's story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", the reader can make a connection between the way the grandmother is depicted and the way society of the time viewed women (O 'Conner). The grandmother often contacted her family and was constantly ignored, just as women's rights were largely ignored during this time (O'Conner). In this regard, the grandmother depicts the women's rights movement itself while the family depicts the society that ignores the issue at hand. In turn, the Misfit plays the role of government. When the family first comes into contact with the Misfit, the grandmother recognizes him and tells him he is a good man (O'Conner). However, the Misfit has her grandchildren dragged into the woods and killed, which helps symbolize the powerlessness of women in this era against men (O'Conner). There was nothing she could do about it unless society stood up and took action. Also, the mother yells "w...... middle of paper...... with the misfits and replaces family with society and the story begins to directly mirror itself over and over again. /Pay Discrimination."
