  • Essay / Gun Control: Opposing Views - 1211

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head. This happened in Arizona, a state where guns are allowed to be carried in the open, meaning everyone has the ability to carry a gun as long as it is not concealed. When this deputy was shot, the shooter became furious. After shooting 3 other people, his gun jammed, that's when a civilian jumped him and put an end to his irrational behavior. This raises many different opinions on whether guns should be allowed or removed. John Luik, author of the article "Increased availability of guns reduces crime" and Sabina Thaler, author of the article "The claim that increasing availability of guns reduces crime" crime is unfounded” are two examples of people having different opinions on such a controversial topic. Both authors talk about guns killing people, Thalers' article focuses on guns killing innocent people, and Luiks' article focuses on guns as a means of protecting innocent people. Many gun advocates will argue that more guns lower crime rates. These same believers will give facts claiming that the more guns there are in a state, the less likely gun owners are to use them. “The risks of innocent people becoming victims of violent crime, including murder, decrease – not increase – when access to weapons is made easier” (Luik). Luik points out that guns won't make innocent killers, but they will lower crime and death rates. They argue that the states with the lowest crime rates are the same ones that have a higher rate of gun ownership than any other state. Gun enthusiasts have statistics that will prove their point about guns saving lives. According to a study by Lott "...for each additional year that laws allowing people to carry concealed handguns were in effect, thefts decreased...... middle of paper ... or someone's home else. Our Constitution gives us the right “to have a well regulated militia…the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” Is it our constitutional right to carry a gun, or does our U.S. Constitution put us all at risk? Every Tom, Dick and Harry will always have their own opinion on whether guns are a way to save lives or take them away.
