    Race and Ethnicity in the ClassroomEthnic patterns change each year. It seems that minority groups are growing and getting stronger with each new school year. There are now many minority groups in schools. “Nearly half (46%) of school-age youth in the United States will be people of color by 2020 (Pallas, Natriello, & McDill, 1989).” A minority group is "a group generally numerically smaller than the rest of the state's population... (AJ Jongman and AP Schmid)." There were two major groups in the school environment, blacks and whites. Now there are whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, etc. And on top of that (these aren't really minority groups), there are the "freaks", the nerds, the obese and the homosexuals. With all the groups, the feeling for everyone became stronger. For example: “Typically, members of a minority group share a sense of solidarity and a desire to preserve their culture, traditions, religion or language (AJ Jongman and AP Schmid).” With all these gangs forming all over the United States, every minority is sticking together, more than ever. They are all proud of who they are and their ethnicity. Fear of homosexuals and hatred towards “monsters” have also increased. This makes it more difficult for teachers and principals to ensure that everything goes well. This change will have a significant impact on our public schools.
