Essay / Car Analysis: Volvo - 890
Volvos are considered the safest cars on the road, but are they more than safe, and what I mean, can they also be entertaining and fun? I've driven several different Volvo models over the past few years, some SUVs, a few convertibles, and even some of their impressive luxury sedans, but I've never really found any of them completely entertaining. The only one I didn't have I spent some time with the C30 and although I took a good look at its arrival on our shores, I wasn't too impressed. It has something to do with its clinical nature, everything is sterile and it feels like if you look at it you can infect it. But to be fair, I've spent two weeks with two versions of the C30 now and here's a surprising conclusion. The C30 breaks the mold of Volvo's sterile stigma and is fun, entertaining and spirited and not just with the C30 2.5T RD, but with the 2.0 Auto version as well. On our test sheet, the chassis and suspension scored high on both models and what I liked most was that they were firm, but also forgiving and communicative. The suspension complements the ride very well and inspires a good dose of confidence when cornering. This obviously bodes well for the steering and handling which are also well weighted, perhaps a little heavy at times, but by the same token quite good. In a switchback test, the C30 2.5T was even more impressive and came out at speeds better than some Quattro and AWD models managed with its predictable understeer, and when pushed to the limits of the tires, the dynamic stability control has nothing to do with the Ref in the World Cup final penalizing you, it just pushes you in the right direction. The 107kW 2.0 liter 4 cylinder petro...... middle of paper...... is the best looking and pulls just enough. of attention with its two trumpets at the rear and its low and aggressive stance. When I first saw the C30, I was a little confused about the rear window that doubles as a tailgate lid and those massive doors that don't want to stay open, but none of that worked. really does matter, as most kids will tell you, it always seems. Overall, the C30 broke the mold and moved away from Volvo's pristine and sterile heritage, but at the same time showed that the men in white coats at Swedish company Volvo Holdings still have a childish nature in them and that some things just need to be released. As of August 2, 2010, Zhejiang Geely Holdings of China purchased Volvo Car Corporation in a 100% deal with Ford, and while this is a good thing economically, I hope the C30 and Volvo remain the company they have always been.
