  • Essay / The Stress and Reward of Returning to School - 874

When I decided to return to school after a fourteen-year hiatus, many stressors became apparent in my life. The first known stressor that affected the additional task of returning to school was work. Since I tend to be very busy at my workplace and sometimes take work home, this took its toll on me pretty quickly. The second stressor was trying to take care of the household. Trying to find time between cooking, cleaning, laundry, and schoolwork had me running around like a “headless chicken.” The third was being a single parent and adding another task to my already busy life. I also had to take care of my children with their homework, their sports and everything children like to do. For all of these stressors, I found myself calling my mentor who recently retired from the military and asking for advice. By calling him and discussing my three stress issues, he and I came to some conclusions about how to handle them properly. We decided to write down my daily task that needed to be done throughout the day. We then prioritized them and set the deadlines during which they had to be completed according to a weekly schedule. After making a schedule for everything, I discovered that I wasn't as overwhelmed as I thought and was just experiencing the initial shock of going back to school. During the process of returning to school for the first three weeks, I was told that I would have to undergo several surgeries for all of my medical issues regarding my spine. The first one was scheduled right before my second class and there was no way around it. Even though I had made arrangements at school and work, I knew I was going to struggle with painkillers, physical limitations, other upcoming surgeries, and keeping...... in the middle paper......a driving force for what I will become after I retire from the Air Force. For example, it will give me confidence and assurance that I will be marketable in the civilian job market. I hope that one day after I retire, I will become a civilian manager with the military overseas. This would not only give me a satisfying job, but also allow me to give back to the younger military generation. Returning to school was a stressful but rewarding experience, giving me an edge on my present and future goals. It opened my mind to more possibilities and gave me hope for a better future. I believe that although there have been and will be more stressors, these are what should be considered good stressors. By doing this, I also believe that after my bachelor's degree in Business Organizational Management, I will continue to obtain a master's degree and expand my studies..
