Essay / Bullying: A Repetitive Epidemic - 1608 “bullying” (“Bullying Statistics 2010”). How does a person detect if someone is being bullied? “A person is a victim of bullying when they are repeatedly exposed over time to negative actions from one or more other people and have difficulty defending themselves” (Olweus). Bullying occurs more in middle school because they are trying to satisfy a strong need for power, fit in with their peers, and satisfy their pain. “Fear of being excluded by peers leads to abandonment if the adolescent is aware of a bullying situation and decides to stay away or not get involved” (Vassar 26). Victims of bullying are targeted because of their sexuality, gender, religion, disability and interests. 71 percent of victims say harassment is an ongoing problem. The effects of harassment can be better understood through the types of harassment, the consequences of harassment, and legal policies prohibiting all forms of harassment. “School bullying can be physical, verbal, sexual, emotional, racial, religious, [cyber] or a combination of these. of these forms” (Vassar 19). Physical bullying involves: hitting, pushing, tripping, slapping and spitting; physical bullying can cross the line into sexual bullying. This is a serious problem that affects the bully, the victim and the witnesses. This usually occurs in men and can also occur in women, who are usually stronger than their victims. Middle school is the age where bullying is common because they are trying to fit in with others their age.
