  • Essay / Essay on Violence and Violence in Mass Media - 1739

Mass media is part of our daily lives, it is said that it can influence a person's choice, opinion or behavior . The increase in violent crime in our society has caused people to blame mass media violence because it can increase violent and aggressive behavior, which will eventually lead them to commit a violent crime. Although many factors can contribute to this type of behavior, can mass media really have such an influence on us? Research has been done to see if there is a link between violence in the media and violence and aggressive behavior. For example, the study by Professor Bushman of Ohio State University found that people who played violent video games for three consecutive days showed an increase in aggression and hostile behavior (Feedback). Today, some disagree that media violence can incite an individual to behave violently or aggressively. Joshua Quittner, author of the article “ARE VIDEO GAMES REALLY THAT BAD?” ", says he enjoys playing the bloodier games like Bushido Blade and Tekken 2. He says he doesn't feel like those games changed his behavior or hurt him in any way, but he says these games help him improve his reflexes. Recently, our country has been plagued by numerous shootings, which have taken place in schools, government buildings and movie theaters. Studies have been carried out to determine if there are links between media violence and the murders that have taken place. For example, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting led President Obama to want to investigate whether there was a connection between gun violence and media violence (Christian Science Monitor). According to the police, who are searching... in the middle of the newspaper... the theory is that we can learn lessons from the violence that is shown in the media. These theories that exist will be difficult to accept due to the violent crimes that have occurred in our society. With all the violence that exists in the media, some people have called for violence in mass media to be banned or censored. The state of California attempted to pass a law to restrict violence, but due to the First Amendment, the Supreme Court rejected it. Trying to get rid of media violence in our society is and will be an impossible task, but by using other alternatives like that of the Federal Communications Commission, we can reduce the violence manifested. Hopefully this will lead to a decrease in violent crime in our society and put an end to violent crimes like those at Sandy Hook and the Navy Yard in Washington DC..
