Essay / Discussion on the relationship between ethnicity and leisure
Ethnicity is understood as a unique cultural heritage or a set of cultural characteristics passed down from generation to generation. It is commonly experienced through language patterns, family life, religion and even leisure habits. While culture refers to the attitudes, practices, customs and behaviors that characterize a group of people. As the world becomes more ethically and culturally diverse, further research on ethnicity, culture, and visible minority groups is needed to give us insight into their relationship to leisure and way to correctly and effectively plan leisure activities taking them into account. The effects of a person's cultural or ethnic minority status are evident through differences in the leisure participation of ethnic, cultural, and visible minorities. Through research, there are at least six explanations for why there are differences in leisure participation. Two of the first explanations were marginality and the ethnic or subcultural thesis. The marginality thesis proposes that ethnic and racial differences in leisure activities are the result of systemic constraints on their leisure participation, such as poverty and socioeconomic status. This shows that the leisure activities pursued by these individuals are those which are the least constrained to them depending on their status. The ethnicity or subculture thesis suggests that difference is explained by the values, norms, and socialization that reflect an individual's distinct cultural identity. This thesis could discourage participation in certain types of leisure if the proposed leisure activity and the individual's cultural identity do not match.Say no to plagiarism. The first explanation for discrimination is known as perceived personal discrimination. Perceived personal discrimination suggests that the negative impact on leisure participation is due to perceptions of discrimination from others in the leisure setting. While the impact of institutional discrimination is linked to practices widely used by organizations or communities, which are used without prejudice or intent to harm. In addition to the previous four explanations, two additional reasons have recently been proposed. One being positive emotion or affect which refers to one of the properties associated with leisure participation. Positive emotion or affect refers to engaging in specific mood-producing behaviors in order to achieve individuals' desired mood if they are not currently experiencing that mood. Indeed, the types of moods that individuals attempt to achieve depend on their cultural background. This is evident since many European Americans prefer high arousal activities, while many Chinese Canadians prefer low arousal activities. Based on these preferences, we would expect greater participation of Euro-Canadians in snowboarding than that of Chinese Canadians who would typically participate in reading (Walker, 2013). Another additional reason is acculturation, which applies most to immigrants and their children. Acculturation is the change in the experiences of an individual or cultural group due to..
