What is “magic”? One dictionary definition describes the word as "Any mysterious and overwhelming quality which leads to singular distinction and enchantment", and another as "Possessing distinctive qualities which produce inexplicable and puzzling events" ("Magic"). Magical realism as a literary technique encompasses all literary materials that incorporate supernatural elements into the natural world, has found its way into many modern texts, and has close cousins in the literary genre universe. For most people, the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "magic" is a group of people with magic wands conjuring up all sorts of fanciful images out of thin air. Similarly, magical realism is a literary technique that combines “…a rational view of reality and…acceptance of the supernatural as a prosaic reality…” (Moore). The general idea is that supernatural and natural elements can coexist quite plausibly. The characteristics of such a classification imply a hybrid quality, "exemplified in the inharmonious arenas of oppositions such as urban and rural, western and indigenous...borders, mixture and change", and l ambiguity regarding “the accuracy of events and the credibility of events”. the worldviews expressed by the characters…” while keeping the supernatural events indisputable (Moore). The first recorded appearance of magical realism occurred as a category of art described by Fran Roh, an art critic, who saw it as "a way of representing and responding to reality and pictorially describing the enigmas of reality . (Moore). Later, around the 1940s, "magic realism was a means of expressing the American realist mentality and creating an autonomous literary style." in Latin America (Moore). This particular realism...... middle of paper ......ique can be found almost anywhere the extraordinary and the ordinary collide, stems from artistic roots but is found in several modern literary works, and is defends against fantasy and science fiction stereotypes. Using magical realism can create interest in almost any plot and intensify messages or themes to the reader.
