Essay / Realism - 1239
How about explaining the entire history of the human world with a single theory based on a few basic assumptions? It might be easier to start by trying to explain an event or time period as a warm-up. There are many theories about how the global political arena works, namely realism, liberalism, constructivism, Marxism, green theory and a host of others, as well as variations of those just mentioned . There is of course some truth in all theories, but each is imperfect to some extent (Lisinski). Realism operates under the assumption that states are the only actors on the political stage, also known as statism (including individualism). Additionally, states operate in a system of anarchy. This means that in the absence of a higher, transgovernmental and universally recognizable authority, as is the case in the world, no rules exist or are followed in the international arena. The other assumption is that politics is motivated by certain aspects of human behavior – many motivations such as the pursuit of power, the desire to dominate, self-interest, and ambition (Lisinski). One of the most controversial problems in international relations is explaining the emergence of war. Defining war is easy: it is a military conflict between two or more parties. However, difficulties arise when we ask why wars break out. A realist would postulate that war is linked to human behavior, therefore wars are natural phenomena, and that the system of anarchy resulting from the absence of a higher power leads to a state of war (Lisinkski). Realism therefore offers a rather cynical explanation: we are destined to fight wars, since all politics is a struggle both for power and for survival. Wars can be fought either to protect or increase the security of...... middle of paper ... but also than any other theory. Its emphasis on social factors and the importance of ideas allows it to address problems that are not even within the scope of other theories. Furthermore, the example of liberalism, Christianity and socialism, among others, proves that ideas and ideologies can actually change the world – as has already been mentioned, a fundamental belief of constructivism. The superiority of constructivism can be seen in the fact that it is able to explain realism, while realism cannot do the same (Lisinksi). Plus, as my international politics professor once said after another student asked him what constructivism was: "No one really knows," which means there's a lot to take in. taken into account in the theory since it is simply a consideration of human ideas, interpretation and consciousness as they are. concern international relations. I like it. Sometimes it's better not to know.
