  • Essay / The theme of relationships in Noonan and a Good Man is...

In this article, I will demonstrate the important role relationships play in the short stories Noonan and A Good Man is Hard to Find, focusing on the main characters in each story and the impact their relationships have on the way they behave. The theme of relationships in these stories essentially ties the stories together. The claim I want to make in this article is that relationships affect the way people interact not only with their family, but also with other people. These two short stories demonstrate this point repeatedly. This particular theme plays a role throughout Southern literature. Faithful to the genre of southern literature, Dr. Vasseur inserts this theme into his short stories. In Noonan, this theme appears in almost every page read. The starting point of this theme begins when the author recounts the days of his youth. “That year, I had a rivalry with Greg Edgeman, the Mullen Motors pitcher… but we got along well off the field (Vasseur 7).” This statement shows how as children, people already tend to emphasize their relationships. Another aspect of relationships is how family relationships can strain children's happiness. This is best illustrated by the father stopping attending his son's baseball games when things turn bad between him and his wife. The boy remembers one night when, while lying in bed, he overhears an argument between his mother and father. There was an atmosphere in our home that was both hushed and yet very tense, and I trace it firmly, for sure, to the night when they began to speak to each other angrily, with voices that I had never heard before. 'none of them (Vasseur 8). The boy lies on the bed and wonders if he did something wrong. This is a common occurrence in domestic disputes. Children think they are the problem when an argument arises, when in fact; it has nothing to do with them. Relationships often change the way people behave if the relationship is important to everyone. The relationship between Noonan and the boy is the main illustration of this. This unlikely couple forms a unique bond between them. This bond is formed the moment the boy lies to his parents about his flight with Noonan. Noonan pilots a biplane and quickly earns a reputation as a reckless daredevil..
