  • Essay / The Importance of Data Visualization - 1091

We acquire more information through vision than through all the other senses combined. “The brain's approximately 20 billion neurons devoted to analyzing visual information provide a pattern-finding mechanism that is a fundamental part of much of our cognitive activity,” according to Colin Ware, in his book Information Visualization. (Ware, 2013) Better decisions are made when based on information that reduces uncertainty rather than an intuitive approach. It becomes overwhelming when information comes from various sources, in different formats and presented in various ways. The opportunity to improve situational awareness and assist decision makers increases if this information can be represented visually effectively. Visualization is often considered an effective way to communicate information. This can be achieved by sending the right message/intended message to a particular recipient(s) via visuals. (Summers, Jones and Flo, 2005) Effective data visualization tools/techniques provide meaningful visualization of data that allows "non-technical" users to make quick decisions, thereby reducing their interpretation/analysis time by enormous data. Better decisions can be made with accurate data, reducing uncertainty. Edward Tufte in his seminal work The Visual Display of Quantitative Information explains: “Graphs reveal data.” “Indeed, graphs can be more precise and revealing than conventional statistical calculations.” (Tufte, 1983)According to a survey conducted by TDWI, only 7% of 453 survey respondents are "very satisfied" with their ability to visualize and interact with data visually in order to effectively communicate information and make decisions based on the information. represented by graphs...... middle of paper ......k excels in initial analysis but might not produce the desired result for the organization. Visualizations with this ability to explore deeper data can prevent leaders from making arbitrary/subjective decisions. (SilkRoad, 2013)ReferencesSilkRoad. (2013).
