Essay / Watching the Shawshank Redemption Movie Characters
Shawshank Redemption is about two men, Andy and Red, who are both imprisoned in Shawshank Prison and eventually bond and find redemption together through random acts of kindness . It all began in 1947, when a man named Andy Dufresne was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Even though Andy was innocent, he was sentenced to two life sentences and was scheduled to serve them at Shawshank Prison.Reflective Observation 1The first night Andy and other new inmates arrived at the prison, one inmate was hysterical and refused to stop talking, leading to one of the guards (Hadley) beating him viciously (he would die later that night). From the Hadleys' perspective, it appears that they are making sure that the inmates know their place and that they know the personal power they have over them. For the new prisoners, they most likely perceived the situation as a warning sign, they are no longer in control of their lives, whatever the guards say. Inmates who have been residing at Shawshank for some time now seemed to view the situation as a tragedy. Once the guards started coming for the beaten inmate, the other inmates tried to help him by telling him to "shut up" and "shut up." I don't think any of the inmates wanted this man to die. A neutral observer would have seen abuse of power by guards and large numbers of frightened inmates. This scene affected me by making me uncomfortable; even though I can't stop it, I realized that what happened to this inmate can easily happen to anyone in prison and it's the guards' word on the inmates. Within the prison system there is most likely a lot of abuse of power, between almost everyone there and it bothers me to think about it.Observa...... middle of paper ..... .ment.Observation 4To obtain To understand why Andy stole all the manager's money and sent his account books to the newspaper, reinforcement theory is used. Andy worked hard for Shawshank Prison and for virtually everyone inside. So when he escaped from prison, he felt that he was owed some sort of recompense for his behavior. The reward in this situation is both monetary and personal; Andy received $370,000 and he also took revenge on Hadley and the principal for the negative behaviors they had inflicted on him. In this case, the roles were reversed and the boss and manager were punished for their unwanted behaviors. The principal could not accept his punishment and decided to leave life permanently.ReferencesOsland, J., Kolb, D., Rubin, I. and Turner, M (2007). Organizational behavior: an experiential approach.
