Essay / Be still and know - 733
The book of Job in the Old Testament explores many questions we ask as human beings. Why do the good suffer? How can we comfort someone who is suffering? Does our sin bring us suffering? How do we keep our faith when times are tough? These are just a few that came to mind while reading Job. We witness human suffering every day. Just turn on the news and we are shown so many stories of human suffering that we ask ourselves the question: "If God is so good and so just, why are so many people suffering?" The story of Job shows us that we must keep our faith in the face of the worst that God can throw at us. When we face life's challenges, where does our hope lie? It is inevitable that we will face challenges or suffering in this life. The question is not if, but when. What we put our hope or faith in will determine how we deal with the suffering that life throws at us. The book of Job opens with Satan questioning God. Satan attacks God by insinuating that people only praise Him when things are going well for them. God in turn asks Satan: “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is no one like him on earth, a perfect and upright man, who fears God and avoids evil. » (Wilkie and Hurt 91) Satan almost mocks God's face and says that Job is only his servant because his life is blessed. Now God must prove to Satan that Job is perfect and faithful. Job is just going about his business, living a good and faithful life, and suddenly his world collapses around him. First, he loses all his livestock, his employees are murdered and his 10 children are killed in a storm. This did not turn him away from God. His response to this was: “Naked, I came out of my mother's womb, and middle of paper… it's advice, but in reality it only condemns him. Job does not let them break his faith. He knows that his hope lies in the Lord and he knows that if he strays from his faith, he will not see the glory of Heaven. Job was never given the reason why he was suffering. Like Job, we can go through many difficulties without ever understanding why God would lead us into tragedy. It’s not our job to wonder why, it’s our job to know that if God gets us there, God will help us get there. God does everything for our good. Job shows us that even when we don't understand, it is important to always keep our faith. The best lesson to learn from Job is that in times of trial we should be still and know that he is God.
