  • Essay / Okami - Video Games as Art - 2916

Over the past decade, there has been a debate over whether video games can be considered art. Although most are in favor, there have been a few detractors (the most famous being the late Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times). At the same time, that hasn't stopped museums from taking on the challenge of creating exhibitions focused on video games, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York. During my summer vacation, I was able to see the Museum of the Moving Image's video game exhibit in action and came away very impressed with the selection of games there - ranging from classics to arcade like Space Invaders to newer titles like Super Mario Galaxy 2. What I mean is that I believe video games are an art form like no other – a truly interactive art form. For this reason, the game I have chosen to analyze as a work of art excels in many areas, including visual impact, conveying ideas to the player and, perhaps most importantly, the reason why video games should be recognized as art.Ōkami is an action-adventure video game released in 2006 for PlayStation 2 and in 2008 for Wii. A culmination of various aspects of Japanese folklore, the game stars Ōkami Amaterasu (the sun goddess) and chronicles her quest to save the country of Nippon (Japan) from the evils of Orochi, an evil presence who has wreaked havoc and darkness on earth. The game is well known for its striking visuals thanks to its variety of artistic styles, with Japanese watercolor, ukiyo-e (Japanese wood carving art), and sumi-e (ink and wash) coming together to offer a signature visual aesthetic that ties strongly into the game's source material.
