  • Essay / Thomas Hume's View on Miracles - 1124

There are different types of miracles and they exist for those who have a reason to believe in them. Thomas Hume believes that miracles are not real. He says there is a reasonable explanation behind all “miracles” and a logical way to explain them. On the contrary, survivors of almost unimaginable circumstances equate their survival with some kind of phenomenon or miracle. On the one hand, there is a philosopher who possesses rational knowledge of why miracles do not exist, but on the other hand, there are survivors who associate their endurance with a life-and-death situation at a miracle of some sort. Miracles exist for those who need them, and that means they exist. The more trials a person has experienced, the more he needs to believe in miracles. It's a great feeling to know that there is some sort of supernatural force watching over you. A miracle is defined as “a surprising and welcoming event that is not explainable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered the work of divine agency.” (Webster's Dictionary). According to Hume, “a miracle is a violation of the laws of nature”. (Hume 76). Hume believes that “nothing is considered a miracle if it occurs in the normal course of nature.” (Hume 76). He uses the example of a healthy man who dies suddenly. While “it is no miracle that a man, apparently in good health, should suddenly die” (Hume 77), it could be considered a miracle for those who must deal with this loss. If someone is healthy, it's very surprising and that's part of what makes a miracle a miracle. Sometimes an untimely death is inexplicable and a wonder at the same time. Maybe the pain of losing someone without any warning...... middle of paper......d, but having managed to survive is already a miracle and that requires no justification d 'any kind. Whether or not one personally believes in them Miracles are a personal choice, a choice that should not be dictated by anyone or anything. The more trials a person goes through, the more they believe in supernatural forces. Sometimes it's living life and going through difficult experiences that make people wonder how they ever survived. When there is no logical answer, then we have discovered that we have experienced a miracle. This is not a subject that can simply be said to be true or not. It is something that a person must feel internally and that can be the answer. Works Cited Hume, David. An investigation into human understanding. Hackett Publishing Company, Inc, 1977.
