Essay / Conflict in "A Disobedient Daughter" - 897
William James once said: "Whenever you are in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and 'deepen. This factor is attitude. This came in very handy for Latha in Ru Freeman's "A Disobedient Girl." Latha was a servant of the Vithanage family, and even though she performed her daily duties as a servant, she was treated as if she were filth. His main problems were with Mrs. Vithanage, the mother of the family. Mrs. Vithanage despised her and created conflicts with Latha whenever she got the chance. Ms. Vithanage created these problems through hatred, jealousy and neglect. “Will you stop talking about the sandals?” Didn't I just tell you that sandals weren't necessary? What do you have? Mrs. Vithanage rarely raised her voice to reprimand any of her servants…” (p. 46) Latha walked and worked on her feet all day and her shoes were old and torn, she badly needed a new pair of shoes but Mrs. Vithanage didn't allow him, it was a form of hatred. “Why do you need money?” It's safer at the bank. Mrs. Vithanage despised Latha so much that she did not even reward her with her daily salary. Latha worked 10 years with 2 bonuses, and Ms Vithanage said she put it all straight into the bank, but why. Why couldn't Latha sometimes use her money for things she wanted, or even needed, like new shoes. Latha was a servant but she was also very intelligent. She was even considered smarter than Mrs. Vithanage's daughter Thara. Mrs. Vithanage envied the fact that Latha was smarter than her daughter and tried to sabotage her education by removing her from school. "It is against the law to keep a child in slavery like this, without sending him to school... middle of paper... conflicts, sorrow, pain and even love. Conflicts are described as giving rise to collision or disagreement; be contradictory, disagree or oppose. This basically describes life, life is made up of thousands and thousands of different opinions and each disagrees with each other so they are in conflict/disagreement. There are many types of conflicts such as racial conflicts, political conflicts, economic conflicts, internal conflicts and many more. Conflict is a natural part of life and there is no way around it, but there are ways to manage, resolve and overcome it. Works Cited • Freeman, Ru. A Disobedient Girl, a novel.
