  • Essay / Analysis by Derek Bauer and Zapiro - 3523

It depicts Mandela standing on top of the world while fireworks explode around him, celebrating everything he has done for South Africa as well as the end of his presidency. The caption “The world bids farewell to an icon…” and as if in response to this Mandela looked shy and blushed, he simply said “Icon? Aikona! » “Aikona” just seems “no”, so he dies at the thought of thinking of himself as an icon. This shows his humility and grace. The cartoon was first published in 1999, but another color version of the same cartoon was released again in 2013 after Mandela's publication.
