This is an interesting question that is often asked and also answered in different ways. Management and leadership are very different skills. The main difference between managers and leaders can be identified in the way they motivate the people who work for them or follow them. Managers have subordinates, use an authoritarian/transactional style, are focused on work, and seek comfort. Leaders have followers, use a charismatic/transformational style, are people-oriented, and risk-seeking. What is Management: “Management is the process of working with people and resources to achieve organizational goals. Good managers do these things both effectively and efficiently. (Bateman and Snell, 2004). Management contains four basic functions; plan, organize, direct and control. By using these four functions, one can create an organization successfully and competently. Planning means specifying the objectives to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions necessary to achieve these objectives. Planning sets the stage for major actions and achievements. To organize is to bring together and coordinate the human, financial, physical, informational and other resources needed to achieve objectives. Organizing attracts people to organizations, specifying job responsibilities, grouping jobs into work units, gathering and allocating resources, and creating conditions for people and things to work together to achieve success maximum.
