Essay / Freedom in My Jim, by Nancy Rawles and The Adventures...
As the catalyst of dreams, freedom is desired and defines all Americans.Life. Freedom. The quest for happiness. These ideas bring Americans together and create a common definition of freedom. Freedom became the genesis of some of the most influential revolutions in history. Although loved by many, it is also taken for granted by those who are unaware of how much it actually costs. It is only through difficulties that one can truly understand the true value of freedom. Particularly apparent in literature, it spurs almost every character into action and causes countless unions and divisions. While both works explore the importance of freedom, Mark Twain's The Adventures of HuckleberryFinn (1884) focuses on the idea that freedom brings about change in people; In contrast, My Jim (2005) by Nancy Rawles explores the idea that although freedom gives us the opportunity to explore new aspects of life, it can cost us our innocence! Freedom as a catalyst for change is evident in many literary works; best represented by The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck Finn begins as a boy with a very limited view of the world. His father is a drunkard, which forces him to move between his real home and the widow's estate. Therefore, Huck's rebellious nature (who longs for freedom) is visible very early in the novel, with his reluctance to be "civilized" and his escape to Jackson's Island. Once Jim's journey to freedom begins, Huck's level of self-confidence and understanding seems to skyrocket. It is very evident that Huck enjoys life on the river, especially in the dialogue: "Other places seem so cramped and stuffy, but not a raft." Sometimes the question everyone faces is what they are willing to give up to get there. Although birds fly freely in the air, sometimes they need to land and rest for a while. We have the freedom to manipulate and use as we wish, but every now and then we need to stop and reflect on what countless people have endured in the past to obtain this freedom. This comes at a price that some cannot even imagine. We may never know the sacrifices that have been made throughout history to give us freedom, but an essential practice to follow is to give thanks. For the freedom gained, for the sacrifices made and the dreams we can achieve. Many take this for granted, but there is no need to think this way. See beyond the difficulties, challenges, trials and tests, and it will become truly clear that freedom is not free..
