  • Essay / Mozart Piano Sonata in A Major - 414

Mozart Piano Sonata in A MajorThe recognized style in the classical period in which this was written was to write sonatas in sonata form - the concept of recapitulation, development and exposition. Indeed, the majority of Mozart's other sonatas were written this way. However, this sonata has a different but very distinct form. The first movement is a theme and a set of six variations. Each variation as well as the theme comprises four four-bar phrases, as shown below. This form allowed Mozart to maintain simple, recurring themes throughout the movement and thus gave the listener a more immediate experience compared to the complexities of sonata form counterpoint. In this first movement, Mozart uses several musical techniques to “popularize” the music; attempts to embellish the notes and provide an extremely melodious and enjoyable final product. The music is embellished with semi-tonal appoggiaturas in the right hand and acciaccaturas in the left, enlivening the melody. As Mozart had just discovered the complex variation of texture that a piano could give, the piece is peppered with sforzando indications, for example in the last beat of bar 28. Each vatiation has characteristics that are their own or that are only evoked in different parts of the piece, for example the alberti. bass in the fifth movement to emphasize the rhythm of the piece of offset chromatic eighth notes, moving the movement forward into the last (sixth) movement. All of these elements serve to immerse the audience in the music, in the same way that stuffing operates in a succulent turkey. The second movement consists of a minuet and a trio. These are entirely different in shape from the first movement and function in Teurary (ABA) form. The minuet is traditionally a very unusual dance at this stage of a piece and one that makes the sonata stand out even more to its audience. This movement is all about dynamics with lots of "sfp" and a handful of dissonant notes, an example being in the second beat of the eighth bar when a G natural in the right hand
