Essay / How Reality TV Impacts Society - 628
In the article “The CSI Effect” by Richard Willings, he discusses the impact of crime scene shows on courtrooms across the country. Richard Willings mainly states that before shows using forensic science, people really didn't want anything to do with it because it was so boring. Once TV shows made it more popular, interest among young people increased significantly. This shows how much of an effect television can have on our lives and one particular genre of television has a big effect on people: “reality shows”. The majority of these shows like “Jersey Shore,” “Love and Hip Hop,” and “Teen Mom” are nothing more than a bunch of people acting stupid on national television. They do not teach society anything positive. These shows have many negative effects on people and I realize three: 1. these shows make it seem like it is okay to resort to violence at any time, 2. It is okay to abuse alcohol and 3. It is acceptable to be pregnant at a young age. Our society seems to have minds that are like sponges and absorb everything. I say this because in this generation, it seems that no matter the age group, they have no problem mimicking what they see on television. For example, the show “Love and Hip Hop” is supposed to be about the love between rappers and their girlfriends/baby mothers or their wives. When you watch the show there isn't much love, mostly a group of women who show no self respect and try to hurt each other, either with their words or with their true fist. Now, what kind of example does this show to the world? They give these young teens and even adults the thought process that it is okay to fight. These are adult women, not teenagers, but adult women who are trying to harm themselves because a girl... middle of paper ... people in society see girls on television and all that goes through their minds is that they want a family like she does. They don't realize that papers, forms and doctors all cost money. They don't realize that they won't want to be children and raise a child, but television doesn't show that. So I would definitely say that reality TV is bad for our society. All these shows do is exploit people who do stupid things and get rewarded for it. People see violence on television and believe it is normal to be violent. Balancing yourself by overindulging in alcohol is a good thing. Not letting children realize that being a mother and father from a young age is not as fun as they think. People in our society are very interested in these shows that are a little scary. Imagine what our future children will look like with these TV shows.
