  • Essay / The Impact of Situation on Individual Behavior

William Shakespeare, one of Britain's best-loved poets and playwrights, said in his play Hamlet: "There is nothing good or bad, but it is thought that makes it so. » The author believes that there is no absolute ethical standard and that ethical standards are set by human beings. Given context, moral standards vary depending on people's views on the situations they encounter. Even though people learn moral norms and legal obligations during their long education, their rigid views are fallible when faced with situations involving the spontaneous human nature of "obedience to authority" (Fromm 685) as “social animal”. )Human beings are likely to adapt to the situation. In his article “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem,” Erich Fromm, one of the preeminent writers and psychologists of the last century, argues that people are inclined to obey rules because they feel “safe and protected.” by authority. The “authoritarian conscience” represents the innate “internalized” nature of human beings that makes them want to please an authority and causes them to fear not satisfying it. “Humanist consciousness” is a mirror of our self-awareness. Based on people's perceptions and ideas, shaped over their lives, they determine what is right or wrong. Fromm also mentions that the "authoritarian conscience" has a much greater impact on a person's decision than the "humanistic conscience" because it has some credibility with the authority and other people follow it as well. Additionally, when their own beliefs conflict ... middle of paper ... is no longer subject to extreme manipulation like that of Adolf Hitler. However, Milgram's experiment clearly shows that these people will also follow the same path as the Germans, due to the fear of not participating in the mainstream of society and the comfort of being officially protected. Human beings live in a society. Society provides them with the basic things including relationships, jobs, money, infrastructure, etc. (Crossman) So, without a sense of belonging in society, people would feel extremely anxious and frustrated. As a “social animal,” humans will look for ways to adapt to society rather than clinging to their own ethical standards. This fact illustrates how sensitive human behavior is to the control of circumstances, where a person goes from the most ethical to the most vicious..
