  • Essay / Relationships Between Sports Teams and Extroversion

IntroductionI will conduct a correlational study to determine if there is a relationship between team sports and extroversion. My two variables are (1) Number of hours played/involved in a sport/team game. (2) Their percentage of extroversion. I will explore what extroversion is and its counterpart, introversion, and what this means in relation to approaching an activity such as a team sport. Next, explain how I conducted the study and explain my results in relation to my predictions. I will then conclude with the significance of the findings and then explain further research that could be conducted in the future. Extroversion… what is it? A modern explanation would be “A person more concerned with external reality than with internal feelings” (Harper Collins, (1991) The Free Dictionary, http://www.thefreedictionary.com/extravert, 2013). This is a brief description of what it is like to be extroverted, they are less concerned with what they feel and think in their own head. They are said to speak without thinking, meaning they will say what is on their mind, without thinking about it. Extroverts are also interpreted as someone “who is energized by the presence of other people” (About.com, (2013) About, http://video.about.com/giftedkids/What-Is-an-Extrovert -.htm#vdTrn, 2013). So, extroverts by nature will enjoy social situations where they are around other people a lot because they prefer that to being alone. Common misconceptions about what it means to be extroverted are that they are loud, outgoing, and extroverted. This is not strictly true, but it may be some traits associated with extroversion. An extroverted person may appear to have great social skills due to the fact that they are energized by ...... middle of paper ...... extroverted may determine that your involvement in team sports is poor. Personality must be considered particularly holistically, that is, taking into account most of the factors that affect it. The problem is that it is extremely complicated to identify the reason for a behavior. What I did was try to focus on very few factors, looking mainly at Eysenck's theory, then introducing Jung's, but only touching on Cattel's trait theory. What additional studies/research can be conducted? In terms of research that can be done in the future, something that I thought about quite early on when starting my own research is that there is a deference between men and women in terms of introversion and of extroversion. Does gender have a role to play in whether or not you participate in team activities? But this could involve other factors that will affect participation in team sports..
