Essay / Essay of the Ecumenical Council - 1390
To face a radically changing world, the Catholic Church must ensure its unity and also make the faith more relevant to people in contemporary society. The Catholic Church responds to societal, political, spiritual, and economic issues and changes by convening an ecumenical council. There have been 21 ecumenical councils. Two of the major councils that have been influential are the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and the Second Vatican Council (1869-1870). Vatican II brought about a very big change in the Catholic Church. He remodeled the church and the liturgy. The council has produced numerous documents relevant to the population. One of the main documents was the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium). This document discussed the liturgy in detail and the changes that were adopted. The Council of Trent was also a very important council in the history of the Church. He responded to the Protestant Reformation and also started the Counter-Reformation. The last ecumenical council took place 50 years ago. Many changes then occurred on the social, political, economic and spiritual levels. Despite these changes, I believe that another ecumenical council should not take place within the next decade. Vatican Council II and Council of Trent Many similarities are evident in both councils. Both councils were convened at a time of social, religious and cultural upheaval. Vatican II was convened after World War II. There were unresolved issues between the countries. It was a great difficult time for people, including Christians. Christians responded to war with a desire for peace and unity. In the period leading up to the Council of Trent, believers were confused about whether they belonged to a religion. They did not know if they...... middle of paper ...... that motherhood was not part of the Church as ordained priests. According to the Vatican II document, Dei verbum the "ordinary and universal magisterium" is exercised by "the Pope in union with the bishops."6 Therefore, any changes to the constitution must be made by higher authorities. These authorities have repeatedly stated in the past that this change will not happen. Thus, the possibility of another council being convened is very low because there are not many issues for the magisterium to address as is the case with other councils. Ecumenical councils are only called to deal with serious questions concerning the Church. In today's contemporary society, where technology advances every year, any matter regarding the magisterium can be discussed immediately through direct communication. I don't think a council is necessary to resolve small issues concerning the Church..
