Essay / Film Analysis: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
“The Great Gatsby”, a film adaptation directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013, is almost as great as the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. a literary classic set in the 1920s in the fictional town of West Egg. The story is based on Nick Carraway, a Midwestern war veteran in the summer of 1922, who finds himself obsessed with the past lifestyle of his mysterious, fabulously wealthy neighbor Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. This film adaptation of the novel is very interesting. It is also easy to understand and holds the viewer's attention throughout the film. In this film, the landscapes, in most cases, are very similar to the description given in the novel. The actors and actresses in this film are well chosen in most cases. The costumes were well designed and matched the description of the given time period i.e. 1920s. A very important aspect that should not be ignored is the narration of the film which adds to the effectiveness of the film. Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) from The Great Gatsby helps reunite lost loves Jay Gatsby, his neighbor (Leonardo DiCarprio) and Daisy. Buchanan, his cousin (Carey Mulligan). Uniquely in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation, Carraway tells the story from inside a sanitarium, where he is led to write everything down as a form of therapy. Fitzgerald's Nick refers to Gatsby as "the man after whom this novel is named", so the form of the text of The Great Gatsby written by Nick is almost the same as that of Luhrmann's film and he expresses himself more deeply in history as Fitzgerald. In the film, Luhrmann showed us how Nick wrote the tale by hand, then typed, and finally put his finished manuscript together. He names Gatsby...... middle of paper ...... his novel. In conclusion, Baz Luhrmann's version of the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby was actually very successful and faithful to the novel. The casting was indeed almost perfect since most of the actors like Toby Maguire (Nick Carraway), Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Carey Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan), Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan) and Jason Clarke (George Willson) all portray their character wonderfully as described in the novel. The settings were superb because they were very descriptive compared to the scenes in the novel. The use of computer generated imaging technology was perfect as it enhanced the landscapes, making them very vivid, realistic and pleasing to the eye. The costumes used in the film were very creative, wonderful and perfect as they suited the class and personality of each of the characters as well as the time period 1920..
