  • Essay / Pilot Fatigue - 1123

Fatigue is a growing concern and problem in the aviation industry. Although this has been going on for some time, the recent increase in workload and stress has helped create a growing problem with real losses and repercussions. “Pilot fatigue, heavy workloads… may have contributed to an air ambulance crashing into the sea at night during a medical mission…” (Crash Blamed 2006 p.31). Fatigue is an “insidious” condition that affects a pilot in a way that can leave them feeling justified in their decisions. (Wald 2008 C3). Without realizing the effects of drowsiness and stress, pilots often make the wrong decision, believing it to be the right one, and suffer serious consequences, such as injury to passengers, injury to crew, or even death, which happens most often. even if a pilot is well trained and may feel competent, he remains human and needs to recharge his batteries. (Réveil 2009 pB2). It is the responsibility of the industry, pilots and citizens to carefully and rigorously examine and resolve scheduling issues and the human factor for the benefit and safety of all. Travel, Workload and Salary Help Cause Fatigue There are several immediate causes of fatigue that pilots face. An immediate cause of pilot burnout is simply the pilot not getting enough hours of sleep. “Being an airline pilot is not a 9-5 job, and is it common to fly when you haven't really slept in many, many hours and, frankly, when you may be more tired. that you shouldn't be? (We were crash pilots…) Additionally, a pilot's demanding expectations regarding paperwork and administrative tasks are also partly to blame. "A pilot's exhaustion caused by his heavy administrative workload...contributed to the fatal accident in...... middle of paper...... 2009. NA. Discovery of the collection. Gale of wind.
