  • Essay / Essay on the Nation-State - 1568

When we talk about a nation-state, it is imperative to distinguish it from other nations. A nation-state is constituted by its political legitimacy which allows it to be a sovereign body or a country within a component of a sovereign territory (Hutchinson, 2012). The State is a geopolitical and political body and the nation is a cultural body. Therefore, the nation-state derives its existence from both geopolitical and ethnic cultural contexts. Furthermore, transnational entities are corporations made up of a divergent group of people and individuals who are located in different national societies. These international entities act on the basis of their common interests or objectives which may include language, religion or territorial guidelines. Transnational communities use these links to strengthen their cohesion which goes well beyond the borders of a nation (Betsill & Bulkeley, 2004). The rise of the nation-state leads to the growth of transnational entities. This is the incident that happened during the post-national and post-colonial period. Transnational entities grew because there was increased emigration from several national and territorial states, both from centralized states like Turkey and federal states like Mexico. A group of people is considered a nation-state if: they are permanent residents of a separate territory, they display a certain system of government, they have a common culture, and they declare themselves independent. When a group becomes a nation, past loyalties to society or tribe must be ceded to the new political order. This includes shared documents and history. Thus, a feeling of a shared future develops (Walter, 2004). The United Kingdom is a good example of a nation that...... middle of paper ......ation facilitates meeting the needs of the nation -state goals. They must establish good relations with other nations and maintain these relations in a way that enhances trade due to the interests of the nation-state (Friedman, 2008). In conclusion, understanding different states and transnational entities is very important, especially when countries plan to work together and carry out transnational activities. There are many shared cultures, policies and values that vary from country to country, from one sovereign state to another. In the 21st century, if these divergent cultures are brought together, the global economy as a whole will experience double-digit growth. The partnership between countries far away from each other can form a perfect transatlantic trade which will be beneficial to the economies of many countries like that of the United States and the European Union..
