  • Essay / The Importance of Abortion and Life - 1096

As defined by the 2012 Merriam Webster Dictionary, an abortion is "the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo. or fetus as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus, usually during the first twelve weeks of development. Abortion is one of the many things that society has a major opinion on. Abortions have always been a debate around the world, in which many may agree or disagree. In these debates, two camps have formed, one pro-choice and the other pro-life. Pro-Choice defends women's right to control their own bodies. To be “pro-choice” when it comes to abortion is to believe that individuals have unlimited freedom when it comes to their own reproductive systems (thewholeinhishands.com). According to Tom Head in Civil Liberties, pro-life opposition is that the person believes that the government has an obligation to preserve all human life, regardless of its intent, viability, or quality of life concerns. They believe that once a child is in the womb, it is alive and that abortion would be an act of murder. Pro-life and pro-choice people differ on many opinions, such as when life begins, the effects it has on the mother, and the role of religion in abortion. For a long time and in many different cultures, abortion has been acceptable. However; in the late 1800s, abortion became illegal. The main reason being that most surgical procedures were very dangerous, including abortions. Britain was the first country to pass anti-abortion laws, but the United States followed and made abortion illegal, except for those necessary to save a woman's life. (Abortion, our bodies, ourselves for the new century) Even though abortions were illegal, that did not stop women from seeking abortion... middle of paper ...... tri surgeon . This shows that women do indeed suffer the consequences of abortion. Pro-choice people, however, assert that abortion is safe; abortions are never safe for the baby in the womb. As for the mother, her safety is questionable as many women suffer mentally and physically. Finally, religion plays a major role in choices made regarding abortion. Pro-choice activists contradict Christian beliefs. In the Bible, Proverbs 6:16-19, it says seven things that the Lord hates. One of these seven is hands shedding innocent blood and that is exactly what an abortion is. Also, in Exodus 13 it says “Do not kill.” Since pro-life activists believe that life begins at conception, aborting a child is murder. These are two things that are against the will of our God. Since Christians were not to obey God's commandments, this is why they are so pro-life..
