Essay / Whether or not to commit a crime based on Gottfredson and...
Gottfredson and Hirsch's theory of self-control revolves around a person's inclination to commit a crime or refrain from committing one crime on the basis of low or high self-control. It is a general theory of crime that explains all crimes in all eras. The main factor is self-control. In this theory, a person with low self-control is much more likely to commit a crime than a person with high self-control. For the definition of crime given by Gottfredson and Hirsch, they state that a crime is an act committed by a person in pursuit of their personal interests. According to this theory, people involved in criminal acts are also prone to impulsive behaviors that provide some form of short-term gratification. These impulsive behaviors include speeding, drinking, and gambling. Due to statistics that the path into or out of crime begins early in life, Gottfredson and Hirsch further argue that the level of self-control depends on the quality of parental education from an early age. This theory goes on to state that parenting is the most important factor in determining a person's self-control. According to the theory, a person will have low self-control in the future if they have a neglectful and abusive upbringing without supervision. For this reason, they might be inclined to be impulsive, take risks, be non-verbal, and commit crimes throughout their lives. Great self-control is taught from an early age by parents who supervise and spend the necessary time with their children. Parents teach their children by punishing them for misbehavior and they eventually develop the necessary self-control that allows them to resist the temptations of crime. It also helps them with school life, maintaining a job and relationships. In this theory, if a person has not reached... middle of paper... situations. I feel like their theory best illustrates how an individual with weak ties to society from childhood through adulthood can change their deviant behavior if confronted with a significant life event. This theory explains why some people can change while others cannot. Some people are encountered and choose to accept these life force salient events that allow them to conform to society while other people either do not have these life force salient events or choose not to accept them. This theory demonstrates that people can change over the course of their lives. their lifespan based on the data that saves them. In this theory, changing behavior is a process that a person wishes to undertake because of the relationships they encounter with others during their life. It is a rational theory that shows that when new bonds are formed, people can adapt to change and live a lifestyle consistent with society..
