Guantanamo Bay is an American military prison established in January 2002. The prison is located on the front lines of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. This issue is of vital importance because many human rights violations are still present today in the detention camp, including the medical practice of force-feeding. This practice follows hunger strikes in 2005 and 2013 during which prisoners refused to eat so that perceived injustices could be redressed. The use of force-feeding has been deemed unethical, cruel and inhumane by both the World Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Despite this, military doctors continue to carry out these barbaric practices on unconvicted detainees. These hunger strikes failed to create political change because they lacked international pressure, powerful NGOs, and domestic support due to altered public perception.
