Our changing world is experiencing a growing need for religion in the workplace. In recent years, factors such as terrorist attacks, a faltering economy, increased demand for longer work hours, reduced employee retirement benefits and immigration are believed to have contributed to the rise. (Moore, 2010) With the growing demand for religion in the workplace comes religious diversity. Immigration is one of the causes of creating religious diversity in the workplace. “Over the past 20 years, the United States has granted permanent resident status to an average of approximately 1 million immigrants each year.” (unknown, 2013) Although most immigrants entering the United States are currently Christian, other religions are slowly gaining popularity. “There are currently approximately 1,500 primary religions in the United States” (Borstorff, 2011). The Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist faiths are among the most popular. Increasing religious diversity requires employers to accommodate employees' religious requests. The EEOC states that unless it would create difficulties for business operations, an employer must reasonably accommodate religious beliefs or practices. Reasonable accommodation is any modification made to the normal work environment to allow an employee to practice their religion. Some of these accommodations include flexible hours, shift changes, dress code changes, or other changes to workplace policies. Since there may be multiple requests for religious accommodations, the employer must offer alternatives that cause the least disadvantage to the employee.
