Essay / Personal experiences reflected in metamorphosis by...
Theme 2Writing, like other forms of art, draws on the inspirations of an artist. Whether subtly or overtly, an artist's interactions and perception of the world influence their work. Franz Kafka, born into a Jewish family in Prague, incorporated many of his life experiences into his work The Metamorphosis. The Metamorphosis presents many connections between the life of the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, and Kafka himself. Some literary analysts argue that it serves as an outlet for his distraught life. Based on the events in Gregor Samsa's life, it can be inferred that Franz Kafka used his personal experiences as inspiration for The Metamorphosis. Kafka depicts the relationship he had with his father through the relationship between Gregor and Mr. Samsa. Kafka's father, Hermann Kafka, played an important role in Franz's life. Kafka considered his father "a kind of authoritarian power, capable of easily breaking the will of men and destroying their self-esteem" and Samsa's father exhibits the same qualities (Bio). Gregor Samsa worked as a salesman to support his family because his father had stopped working. Gregor works to "repay [his] parents' debt" and if he "had not held back for the sake of [his] parents, [he] would have stopped a long time ago", showing that he works only for his parents (Kafka 4). . Samsa places great importance on his work because he thinks about "the torture of traveling, worrying about changing trains, eating miserable food at all hours, constantly changing trains, eating miserable food" and rambles on about the stressful life he leads (4). . His father's actions forced him into the miserable lifestyle he leads. Kafka also faced difficult times as his father also shaped his future. While Kafka aspired to find a career as an author...... middle of paper ...... corresponds showing that Kafka integrated his life into The Metamorphosis. Kafka assimilates many aspects of his life in The Metamorphosis. From the relationship with his family to the depression he felt at the end of his life, Kafka creates a character from himself to make him the protagonist. The connection between Samsa and Kafka is clear from experiences and feelings. Kafka drew inspiration from his personal life and experiences to create his masterpiece. The Metamorphosis served as an outlet for Kafka's struggles and was inspired by his own life. Works Cited: Kafka, Franz. Metamorphosis. Ed. and trans. Stanley Corngold.
