Essay / Teen Wilderness Camps - 728
Teen Wilderness Camps are special camps where parents send their troubled teens when they feel like there are no others options for their children. These camps are located in the middle of nowhere and children are forced to walk for hours, sleep in tents and live without adequate sanitation for weeks, sometimes even months. Teen wilderness camps have repeatedly come under fire due to injuries and even deaths, raising questions about whether or not these types of programs should be a legal option. Promoters of wilderness camps for teens point to many positives for these types of places. . Teenagers in these camps are always under the supervision of trained and qualified counselors. Weekly therapy sessions are held where campers can meet one-on-one with a therapist. These teens are also taken away due to the environment they were previously in and placed hundreds of miles away from drugs, alcohol, and their friends who might be a bad influence. However, I believe that the promoters of these camps should take a closer look at all the negative aspects. Teen wilderness camps are hard on their campers, and in many cases, they are too hard. While hiking at Summit Quest Camp in Utah, a camper named Michelle complained of not feeling well and her counselors accused her of faking it and that it was all in her head (Investigative Reports). Due to the negligence of the counselors, Michelle collapsed and died (investigation reports). Her mother sent her to Summit Quest hoping to be able to see her daughter in just a few weeks, but because of the harshness of the camp, she will never be able to see her daughter again. Unfortunately, Michelle's tragic story is not the only blemish in the wilderness campgrounds reputation... middle of paper ...... at the same time they provide very few supplies to their campers . A minority of people believe that with proper regulation and intervention from authorities, these camps could work for troubled teens. Although this may solve some problems, it does not affect the difficult conditions in which adolescents find themselves. These children will still be forced to walk miles a day under the scorching sun and will not have access to running water or adequate sanitation. Wilderness camps for teens may seem like a great solution for a parent who thinks they're out of options, but that's not the case. Sending your teen to one of these camps could leave them with physical and emotional scars, or even death. There are many other options parents can consider, but no matter how struggling a teenager is, wilderness camp should never be an option because it's like sending your child on a death wish..
