Essay / causes of adolescent suicide - 912
Suicide is a critical social problem today. According to Kutcher and Magdalena (2008), one of the three leading causes of death among people aged 15 to 34 is suicide. In the United States, suicide is the third leading cause of death among high school students aged 15 to 19 (Lieberman & Cowan, 2011). Suicide is defined as a person ending their life in a voluntary, instantaneous, and delusional manner, which is considered a self-inflicted death (Comer, 2004). In general, there are six factors that cause adolescents to commit suicide: depression, family factor, youth bias, effect of parental suicide, bullying, and impulsive behavior (see Figure 1 of the Annex 1). First, the factor What could lead young people to suicide is depression, which is the leading cause of suicide (Suicide Prevention Resource Center, 2011). Depression can be classified as a mood disorder in the medical field. According to Cutler, Glaeser, and Norberg (2001), depression can occur depending on two main factors, namely people's variable feeling and financial resource problem, which could be classified as the origin of depression. According to (Cutler et al., 2001), young people who commit suicide aim to indicate to others that they are frustrated or, even worse, to punish others for their misfortune. In this sense, young people are more emotional than others and it is easy to hold negative thoughts about them, which would lead them to a higher risk of suicide. On the other hand, young people do not have an independent financial source. Most of them receive money from their parents or student loans. In this situation, young people are still at the point in their lives where their consumption exceeds their net income (Cutler et al., 2001). As a result, youth struggle to fill... middle of paper... compared to their heterosexual peers (Garofalo, Wolf, Kessel, Palfrey, and Durant cited in Suicide Prevention Resource Center, 2011). LGBT youth have a suicide rate two to four times higher than other heterosexual youth (Suicide Prevention Resource Center, 2008). The next reason is impulsive behavior. According to Marcovitz (2010), people who commit suicide are also likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. People get drunk before making the choice to commit suicide. Alcohol promotes impulsive behavior, which helps the drinker make the final decision to commit suicide (Marcovitz, 2010). Drug abuse is also one of the causes that promote suicide. People often abuse drugs to free themselves from suffering and escape difficulties. Similar to alcohol, drugs have the same effect as alcohol: they promote impulsive behavior..
