Risk FactorsAccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), risk factors are characteristics of an individual that are associated with suicide. These presented characteristics may or may not be directly related to suicide as they vary from individual to individual. Some of the risk factors for suicide in older adults include: • Having suicidal thoughts, planning suicide, or having a desire to die. It is not bad for an older person to think about death as they get older. However, it is risky if an elderly person constantly thinks about it and wishes to die. Thoughts about committing suicide usually precede suicidal behavior and can potentially increase suicide risk. It is thought that the cognitive functioning of older adults may be impaired, which could lead to depression. According to Beck's cognitive triad, depression arises from an unrealistic and negative view of the individual, the world and the future. From the individual's perspective, an older person will have negative thoughts about themselves. He believes himself to be hopeless and incapable of contributing to society. For example, a paralyzed elderly person might think they are worthless because they cannot work due to their limited mobility. Older people will then have a negative view of the world. This happens when the older person thinks the world is unfair to them. This then leads to having negative thoughts about the future, in which older people would conclude that their problems and suffering will recur indefinitely. They will also think that this failure awaits them.
