Essay / Essay on Love in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
The Defeat of Love in A Farewell to ArmsThe story begins in Gorizia, Italy, the headquarters of Frederick's troop, during the First World War. The narrator is Frederick Henry, who is unclear at first. Frederick is an American volunteer in the ambulance corps and a second lieutenant in the Italian army. A young priest remains with the troop. Everyone except Frédéric is Catholic, but he is the only one who respects him. Frederick has some time off and decides where to go. The priest suggests going to Abruzzo. Although Frederick says he will go, he goes to the brothels. When he returns, he says he regrets not going, but that he went to a place where a man can find his inner self. Lieutenant Rinaldi shares a room with Frederick. He is an emotional Italian and always in love with someone. When he is first introduced, he is in love with Catherine Barkley, a nurse at a local hospital. Frederick accompanies Rinaldi to meet him. During their first meeting, Catherine talks about her finances killed in the war. Frédéric begins to visit Catherine every day. Frédéric is not in love with Catherine, but he wishes to have an affair with her. He tries to kiss her, but she slaps him. Frederick has to go to war so she gives him Saint Anthony as a necklace. While fighting, Frédéric is very seriously injured. Rinaldi and the priest visit him in the hospital. Catherine later visits him and they have an affair in the hospital room. After this, Frederick realizes that he is truly, truly in love with her; that he is no longer just attracted to her physically. Catherine is now stationed at the hospital where Frederick is and changes her schedule to night work. Catherine is pregnant and Frédéric feels “biologically trapped”. They are both staying in a hotel room and wish they had somewhere to go after observing an Italian couple in a church. So Frederick must return to war. when they separate, the weather is rainy, cloudy and dark. There is a lot of disease and death in the war, as well as a lot of violence. Frédéric dives into the river to try to “wash away” his war life. He deserted the army to return to Catherine. They find themselves in the town of Stresa. Once reunited, the rain stops and there is light.
