  • Essay / Empathy and Cultural Competence by Michaela Colombo

The article I read was “Empathy and Cultural Competence: Reflections from Teachers of Culturally Diverse Children” by Michaela W. Colombo. After reading this article, I will talk about the topic of the article, my thoughts on the article, and how the article relates to the NAEYC Code of Ethics. The article explains how teachers should have cultural compatibility. Although it may be difficult for some teachers to grasp and understand the behaviors and beliefs of different cultures. Teachers who can are more likely to provide an enriching and culturally responsive learning environment for children. The teacher should have “meaningful interactions with members of other cultures and promote cultural imbalance (Colombo, 2005, p. 2)”. Activities that include this are more likely to increase cultural competence. The article then goes on to explain how a suburban Massachusetts town held professional development to learn about Latino students and hosted two family literacy nights with Latino families. During professional development, teachers completed activities that encouraged “teachers to reflect on their own cultural perspectives and recognize multiple perspectives as well as cultural language differences (Colombo, 2005, p. 2). » The last part of the article focused on four main misconceptions about cultural diversity that were brought up during professional development at a university. English Many teachers have emerged from college professional development with a greater understanding and empathy for culturally diverse families, an understanding of cultural diversity, and multiple perspectives. Overall the article was excellent and I learned a lot from it. The part I found... middle of paper ...... and that is to include it in the NAEYC code of ethics and incorporate it into the class related to cultural diversity . The article explains cultural competency, why it was important, and how to embrace diversity. The article did a great job of informing me about cultural diversity, empathy, and cultural competence with families from different cultures. Additionally, he talked about things that relate to the NAEYC Code of Ethics. ReferencesColombo, MW (2005). Empathy and cultural competence: A teacher's reflections on culturally diverse children.
