The Great Gatsby is believed to reflect his views on his happy life as an author. F. Scott Fitzgerald is the author of many short stories and novels on the history of the Americas, but his works mainly explain the era of the twenties. Fitzgerald was born on September 28, 1896, to an upper-middle-class family living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His mother and father Mollie and Edward Fitzgerald named him after his three-time first cousin Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star-Spangled Banner. His mother previously had two children, Mary and Louise, who sadly died before he was born due to illnesses, at the ages of one and three. Mollie Fitzgerald became pregnant again after this, but lost the baby an hour after birth. However, in 1901, Scott's sister Annabel was born, completing the family. With Fitzgerald's mother having difficulty giving birth to a second child, Scott grew up as a spoiled brat. In the time he lived, he was lucky that he behaved like a child with an upper class attitude. His parents both came from different backgrounds, which showed through to Fitzgerald as he grew up. His mother was believed to view money as position, stability and security; his father believed that the most important things were good manners, instinct, courtesy, honor and courage. Fitzgerald's morals came primarily from his father, but his insecurities about society came from his mother. The Fitzgeralds were a lucky family living a life in the Midwest.
