Essay / Entering an Unfamiliar Culture - 1138
Several years ago I immersed myself in the goth and metal lifestyle and am still a part of it. As soon as I started hearing more about the underground side of the phenomenon, I knew I had to investigate. In the goth and metal lifestyle, no subculture is the same since each genre is like an umbrella, something different always underneath the next. On February 7, 2014, the opportunity presented itself for me to attend my first sold-out Darkside underground concert in Boston at Paradise Rock Club at 10:00 p.m., which is one of their venues on their world tour. Other countries where they will tour are: Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Ireland, United Kingdom , Australia and China. Interestingly enough, their next concert on February 8, 2014 would take place in New York at Terminal 5, between 34th and 59th streets. This room has 5 distinct environments and can accommodate up to 3,000 people. Just a few nights before the concert, a friend of mine called me and asked if I wanted to go because they had an extra ticket available. I immediately said yes. In the days following my acceptance, I waited impatiently; where I'm from, concerts and subcultures barely exist. Even if they exist, they remain secret. After an hour later of driving, my friend and I immediately decided to have dinner. It took us about half an hour to find a place within walking distance of the venue. We ate at Brown Sugar Café, a Thai restaurant; it was a pleasure to try something new. However, it took me a long time to decide what I wanted, which made my friend a little nervous around me. In the end, I opted for the lemon chicken. It was cooked to perfection, crispy and tender; the aroma was perfectly balanced, very light on spices and sea...... middle of paper ......friends, except my friend, had quite an adventure. It wasn't hard for me to blend in with being an outsider and it didn't hinder my efforts at all. Everyone I spoke to was very welcoming and informative. Embracing the new thing didn't scare me at all, which made my courage immediately disappear after immersing myself. In fact, my presence with others did not change their behavior in any way. as I described earlier, Darkside and the audience became one. After all this, I learned that Darkside concerts are the only place where such a subculture can be observed. It's extremely hidden and only a certain number of people know about it, and it will stay that way for now. There are still other questions that need to be answered. But, from now on, immersing myself the way I did has helped me understand why Darkside is the “dark side” of the subculture world..
