  • Essay / Gatsby's unrealistic American dream in The Great...

The term "American dream" is defined as an idea that believes that everyone has the possibility of prosperity and success. The idea originally came from James Adams, a famous American writer and historian. He said: “Life should be better, richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunities for everyone based on their abilities and achievements. » Therefore, the fundamental concepts of the American dream were closely linked to hard work and opportunity. However, this idea began to lose its value when people began using unethical methods to become rich. The excessive industrialization of the 19th century lured countless immigrants to America with their high hopes. As they dreamed high, it could not live up to their expectations (Warshauer). As a result, the American dream has become a tempting and unattainable concept. Of course, the origin of this concept is in the United States of America. In fact, this notion is “the perspective born of the Declaration of Independence: the freedom of all men to pursue their dreams and goals in life provided only that they are willing to work for them” (Excelsior) . However, even though the American Dream actually existed, this concept only included the rich and powerful. For the majority of the population who eagerly emigrated to the United States to experience this concept, the American dream was a lie (Ditchfield). The harsh reality of this dream was astonishing. These facts were about immigrants seeking to realize their dreams in America: the undesirable consequences of their carefree pursuit of wealth and happiness were caused by the lofty hopes of the American dream. So I believe that this term has caused countless populations to suffer. ...... middle of paper ......n underlying strength of this unique novel. Works Cited Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby.
